From Medals to Motherhood: Shawn Johnson East Shares Why She’s Championing Beyfortus

Gold-medal gymnast Shawn Johnson East’s motherhood mantra is doing what she can to try to control the controllables; as a parent, her priority is helping to keep her family healthy and yet, as all moms can agree, there’s still so much she can’t control, like kids catching viruses.

Shawn and Andrew’s kids (Drew and Jett) were both impacted by lung infections caused by respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV. Jett’s lung infection was so serious it resulted in hospitalization.

So, when she gave birth to her third baby, Barrett, known as Bear, Shawn and her husband decided after considering all the options to help protect him with Beyfortus at his first wellness visit.

Watch Shawn and Andrew share their family’s RSV story.

What is Beyfortus?

Beyfortus is not a vaccine. It's a preventative antibody that helps protect babies against serious RSV-related lung infections. While antibodies are naturally produced by our immune system to combat viruses, a baby's immune system may not be strong enough to generate antibodies to fight RSV. This is where preventative antibodies play a crucial role in providing additional protection. Beyfortus may not protect all children. Speak to your doctor about Beyfortus for your baby’s RSV protection.

Frequently asked questions about Beyfortus

Beyfortus is an injection given directly to your baby that provides fast-acting antibody protection (immunization) against serious RSV lung infection. Beyfortus is recommended for newborns and babies born during or entering their first RSV season.

Vaccines are like self-defense instructors. They teach the immune system to create its own antibodies.
Beyfortus is a preventative antibody, which acts like a bodyguard. The RSV injection gives the protection that your baby’s maturing immune system can’t yet provide for itself.

As Beyfortus has been included in the approved immunization schedule, it can be given at the same time as other routine childhood vaccines. This means that it may be available at no cost for parents through private health insurance companies and the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program. VFC is a federally funded program that provides vaccines to children at no cost for those who might not be vaccinated because of an inability to pay. There may be an administration fee.
